BALI, Aug 2023 – This month marks a vibrant and cherished festivities in Bali. The Balinese celebrate Galungan, one of the most important religious festivals.

It holds a unique spiritual significance such as the duration since it lasts for ten days, symbolizing the triumph of good (dharma) over evil (adharma) and is also believed as a sacred moment when the ancestors’ spirits visit the earth during the time.

One of the most captivating elements of the celebration is the penjor decoration. A tall bamboo pole prepared, adorned with vibrant ornaments and offerings stands over the streets and villages. These stunning decorations symbolize the cosmic mountains and serve as a connection between the earthly realm and the divine.

Once upon a time, as the legend goes, a captivating tale rooted in Mayadenawa, a demon who once tyrannized the Balinese. The divine intervention of Lord Indra prevailed upon him, restoring peace and harmony to the whole island. This jubilant occasion commemorates that glorious victory and creates an opportunity to extend gratitude to the ancestral spirits for their watchful protection and guiding presence.

The tone of the diversity of each region’s tradition and customs sketch an alluring array of celebration. Every corner of Bali showcases its unique cultural individuality during this festival.

Adding another layer of the Balinese calendar, Kuningan follows on the ten days after, indicating the end of the spirits’ visit as they return to the heavens. On this day, special prayers and offerings are made at temples and homes to bid farewell to the ancestral spirits and express gratitude for their blessings.

As the island is ready to embrace the spirit of Galungan and Kuningan, we invite everyone to witness this extraordinary cultural experience.
